Facility Inspections
To pair with its decent overall score, we awarded this facility an A for our inspections rating. This is far better than its overall score. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection grades. One critical factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some end up being quite minor. While this facility had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received a strong score in our short-term care category. We awarded this nursing home an above average grade of B+ in this area. In calculating these short-term care scores, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to formulate a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Lastly, we considered the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home, which as an area this facility performed much more favorably. This place outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the nation in this area with 65.8 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most facilities.
Nurse Quality
One of this facility's better category grades was in the area of nursing care. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of C. The nursing rating is based on many subcategories. The most heavily weighted one is the amount of time nurses spend with residents. This nursing home averages 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also factored in some quality-based measures. This facility scored well in some of the quality measures we assessed. For example, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this nursing home performed better than the national average. This is usually a good indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented with better nursing care.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we analyzed is long-term care, proved to be this nursing home's least impressive area. We gave this facility a grade of D in this category. When facilities receive this kind of grade in long-term care it is often a bad sign for patient care and it may mean that the nursing home is not as well-staffed. In addition to considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. We were a bit concerned this facility administered the vaccine to just 90.639275 percent of its patients. Surprisingly, this facility was actually able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.61 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home. This is its best feature in this category.
