In addition to performing well in its overall grade, this facility performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A. Our inspection grades weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better scores in this area usually have few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

We also awarded this nursing home a score of A- for our short-term care grade. Short-term care grades are based on the nursing home's quantity of skilled nursing services. This includes a vast spectrum of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, in addition to other variations of therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the data this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The final item we considered in this area is the number of patients who eventually returned home from the nursing home. We found that 5.4 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.

Turning to an additional strength for this facility, we gave them one of our more positive scores in our long-term care category as well, with a B+. Facilities that excel in this category tend to provide residents with closer supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. After we finished looking at the volume of care provided by nurses, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 94.28571 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia sadly can be a deadly health condition for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a nursing home does not roll the dice on this issue. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

The final area we assessed is nursing. We gave this nursing home a decent grade in this category, with a grade of C. Although this isn't as high as several of this facility's other grades, it is still not a major area of concern. When calculating our nursing scores, we factor in both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This nursing home averages just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low figure. Lastly, we look at quality-based metrics, such as the percentage of patients who suffered pressure ulcers and major falls. These data points are decent indicators of the quality of nursing care.
