Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

In addition to being a first rate nursing home overall, this nursing home also excelled in the category of short-term care, where it earned an A. Our short-term care ratings are important for residents looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires additional skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes a broad range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who ultimately were able to return home from this facility. We found that 6.1 percent of this facility's patients returned home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

Turning to inspections, this facility excelled in that area, which is based on the facility's inspection reports. In fact, we awarded it an A- for that category. Our inspection ratings are based on many datapoints found on the a nursing home's inspection reports. Places that score well in this category typically have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This tells you CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple relatively minor dings aren't the end of the world.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A- for our inspections rating. The nursing rating is based on numerous subcategories. The most important variable is the number of hours nurses spent with residents. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as having a protocol of moving residents even once per day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

The last category we assessed was long-term care, in which this facility was given a B. Believe it or not, this turned out to be this nursing home's least impressive category. A facility is doing something right when it's worst grade still outperforms most facilities. Nursing homes that receive this type of grade in this category typically provide consistent around the clock care to ensure patients are kept in good health. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 98.4375 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is far higher than the majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
