Facility Inspections
This nursing home earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to point out its excellent inspections in recent years. We awarded them an A+ in this category. Inspection grades account for a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better grades in this area usually have few severe deficiencies. This place was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This means that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to create an imminent risk to resident safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we also wanted to point out that this facility was awarded favorable long-term care marks this year. We gave them one of our better scores in that category, with a B+. This proved to be the nursing home's second best grade. Facilities that receive this type of grade in long-term care typically provide consistent around the clock care to make sure residents are well cared for. On top of considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients healthy. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.37 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility has less hospitalizations than the average nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
Tragically, we gave this facility an F for its short-term care score. Short-term care ratings are crucial for residents requiring rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually utilizes more skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means a broad spectrum of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Lastly, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that just 42.8 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home's worst area is nursing, which is the last area we assessed. It received an abysmal F in this area. Despite several decent grades in other areas, this grade is still concerning so we wanted to make a note of it. We looked at the licensure of nurses employed by the facility, as well as the number of hours those nurses worked with residents, in calculating our score in this category. This facility averaged just 2.9 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. In addition to receiving below average scores for nursing hours, this facility was less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in calculating our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of residents suffering pressure ulcers and found this place was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is a bad sign when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, this statistic really pulled down this facility's nursing score significantly.
