Nurse Quality

Grade: A-plus

We also would like to point out that this nursing home excelled in our nursing category. We awarded them an A+ in this area. The nursing score weighs several subcategories, but the primary one is the number of nurse hours per patient per week. This nursing home offers extremely high levels of nursing care, averaging 5.8 hours per resident on a daily basis. This is more nursing care than nearly any other facility provides. Finally, this nursing home also excelled in the quality measures we assessed. It performed as well as any facility Virginia in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

We also wanted to direct your attention to the fact that this facility performed well in our short-term care rating. We awarded them a dominant grade of A+ in this area. Short-term care ratings are based in part on a facility's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This means a wide range of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, in addition to other forms of therapy. This place is above average in terms of both its quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its patients. The last metric we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Virginia in this area with 70.6 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

The third area we assessed is long-term care. This nursing home also received an A+ long-term care grade, making it one of the few nursing homes to be awarded more than one A+ category scores. Facilities that receive this kind of grade in this category typically provide consistent 24/7 care to ensure patients are kept in good health. After looking at the significant amount of nursing hours provided by this nursing home, we next considered the facility's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 98.540146 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is far higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. This combination proved to be effective as this place keeps its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.27 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a much lower hospitalization rate than the average nursing home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

This facility has earned near flawless inspections in recent years. We gave them an impressive grade of A in this category. This is one of the few places in the country to receive an A- or better in all four categories. Inspection grades are tied to items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this category tend to have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Although this place had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
