Facility Inspections
On top of performing well in its overall grade, this facility performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in determining our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This facility was assessed 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be severe. This indicates that the inspectors didn't deem any of these deficiencies an imminent risk to resident health or safety. We should point out that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in this industry.
Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a grade of A- for our short-term care score. Short-term care grades are often employed to gauge a nursing home's rehabilitation services. In order to provide high-end rehabilitation services, facilities generally must provide higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This facility elevated its grade in this category by offering more care from registered nurses than a typical facility. The last measure we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Illinois in this area with 64.5 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
Adding to its profile, this facility also earned a grade of B+ for its nursing rating. This is a well above average score in this category. Our nursing rating looks at the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We look at both the levels of skill of the nurses and the amount of time spent with patients. This place provides an impressive 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident each day. Out of this total, more than one quarter of these hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most skilled levels of nurses. We add more weight to hours worked by skilled nurses in calculating our nursing scores. Lastly, we also looked at certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these areas as reliable measures of the quality of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we looked at turned out to be this nursing home's poorest category. However, even in its weakest link we still gave it a respectable grade of B- for our long-term care category. Our long-term care scores are based in part on a facility's amount of nursing care. This means a broad scope of personal care services, ranging from help with activities of daily living to routine medical services. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination data. We were pleased to learn that this facility vaccinated 99.061035 percent of its patients for pneumonia. Lastly, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home had 3.54 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. While this figure is quite a bit higher than the national average, this number can be skewed for some facilities based on the medical complexity of patients.
