With an address in Gretna, Louisiana, Belle Vie Living Center is one of a mere two nursing homes in this city. This is a subpar facility, with an overall grade of D. Based on our assessment, we would be very reluctant to recommend this facility. This nursing home's only redeeming quality was its inspection score, which we provide more information on below.

While we were fairly low on this nursing home overall, we awarded it an A for our inspections rating. This score is far more impressive than the facility's overall grade. Inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

Moving on to the area of long-term care, this facility received a grade of just D in that category. Sadly, this wound up being one of its better features. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally are a bad sign for the quantity and quality of care provided by nurses and aids. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 92.803024 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is a bit less than we were hoping for but still a reasonably acceptable figure. Finally, we were stunned by the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this nursing home fared poorly with 4.22 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this statistic is more than twice the national average.

This facility wound up receiving a a very poor score in our short-term care area. It received an F in this category. In crafting these short-term care ratings, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to create a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of different facilities. In this nursing home's case, we found that it provides less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients that eventually returned home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 44.8 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.

The final area we looked at is nursing. It received an abysmal F in this area, which is a bottom of the barrel grade. We assessed the qualifications of nurses working for the facility, as well as the quantity of hours the nurses were with residents, in determining our rating in this area. This nursing home averaged a meager 3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is not a very impressive figure. To go along with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this facility also didn't fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This place had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility.
