Facility Inspections
To go along with its relatively modest overall grade, we gave this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. This is far more impressive than the facility's overall score. Our inspection scores account for several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this category tend to have few of these severe deficiencies. Unfortunately, we were not able to locate deficiency counts for this nursing home. We would like to have more information about this nursing home. Without having access to all of the information regarding deficiencies, it was difficult to fully assess it in the inspections category.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received a favorable long-term care score. As a matter of fact, we awarded it a B in that category, which happens to be one of our better. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care typically provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. After assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is higher than most nursing homes. The last datapoint we looked at was the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 2.1 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Nurse Quality
Next, we looked at the nursing category where we gave this nursing home an F. This is certainly not one of this facility's better areas. The nursing score includes numerous subcategories. The most important factor is the quantity of hours nurses spend with residents. Quantity of nursing care does not appear to be the problem here. Based on the data, it looks like this facility provides an above average 3.9 hours per patient per day. This is more nursing care than most places provide. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this facility did not perform as well in the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home was above the national average in both of these statistics.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we rated is short-term care, which was this facility's least impressive category. Unfortunately, we gave it a lowly F in this area, which is obviously very concerning. In the area of short-term care, we seek to assess measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We analyze a facility's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we considered the number of residents who returned home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 29.2 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
