Facility Inspections
In addition to being a first rate facility overall, this facility also performed well in our inspections category, where it received a grade of A+. Very few nursing homes fared as well in this category. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Facilities with higher grades in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This nursing home was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be severe. This indicates that CMS did not deem any of these deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to resident safety or health. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Nurse Quality
To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. Nursing scores are largely tied to a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This particular facility provided 6.1 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This was one of the more impressive figures we found. In addition, a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. In addition to providing high levels of care, this facility was also above average in each of the major quality measures we looked at in this category. For example, it performed well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. These areas are generally good measures of the quality of nursing care a nursing home offers.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to the third area, this nursing home also earned a grade of B+ for its short-term care rating. This is a well above average grade in this category. In determining our short-term care grades, we scrutinize a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This score is frequently a useful assessment of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. One of this facility's strengths is it offers more than seven hours of care per week from registered nurses per patient. This is the gold standard for this metric, as it's approximately 50% higher than the typical nursing home's level of registered nurse staffing. The last metric we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We found that it was respectable in this area with 48.6 percent of its residents returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we rated is long-term care, where this nursing home was given a B. This actually proved to be this nursing home's least impressive area. A facility is doing something right when their worst score still beats out most facilities. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically provide residents with closer supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. On top of looking at the elite level of care provided by nurses aids and other staff at this facility, we also were pleased by the nursing home's vaccination record. By way of example, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. This combination proved to be effective as this facility also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
