Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was decent, it really excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which is one of our best scores. Our inspection scores account for a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with better scores in this area typically have very few severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This tells you the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple of minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this nursing home's more impressive category grades was in the category of long-term care. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of B. Nursing homes that receive this kind of grade in long-term care tend to provide consistent around the clock care to ensure residents are kept in good health. One of the criteria we considered in addition to nurse's aid hours was vaccinations. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 98.45815 percent of its residents. Vaccination is a reliable method to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations for the nursing home population. This facility also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 1.25 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a significantly better hospitalization rate than most nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
The third category we assessed was short-term care. In that category, we gave this facility a decent grade of B-. In our short-term care score, we seek to forge a meaningful barometer for rehabilitation. In this process, we look at a nursing home's level of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its number of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the metrics we assessed. Lastly, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This was a much stronger area for this facility. We found that it outperformed most nursing homes in this area with 57.6 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
The next area we looked at is nursing. We gave it a lowly F in this category, which is a poor score. This is obviously a significant concern. When determining a facility's nursing grade, we assess the amount of time nurses are seeing residents and the level of licensure of the nurses. This facility provided just 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. To go along with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this nursing home also didn't fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This place had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average nursing home.
