Long-term Care Quality
We also found that this facility excelled in our long-term care rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Facilities that excel in this category tend to provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is much higher than most nursing homes. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this place had 2.85 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this wasn't as favorable as most of its other scores in this category, this statistic can be skewed for some facilities due to the medical complexity of patients.
Facility Inspections
The next category we looked at was inspections, where this facility also received an A+ grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Our inspection grades weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better grades in this category tend to have few severe deficiencies. This nursing home was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered severe. This means that CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies to pose an imminent threat to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received a very impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A-. In calculating a facility's nursing grade, we consider the number of hours nurses are caring for patients as well as the level of skill of the nurses. This place provided 4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is an impressive figure which typically leads to quality care. Lastly, this facility also excelled in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. With fewer than five percent of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, this place performed as well as any facility the nation in this category. This is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls. Many pressure ulcers can be avoided by providing better nursing care and having a system of turning residents at least once a day.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we looked at ended up being this facility's poorest area. Nevertheless, even its worst category would be a highlight for most nursing homes. We gave it a strong grade of B in short-term care. Our short-term care scores are considered to be more critical for residents needing rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation generally requires more highly-skilled nursing services. This includes not just nursing, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 33.4 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
