Facility Inspections
Although we did not rate this nursing home well overall, we wanted to point out its decent inspections in recent years. We gave it a relatively respectable grade of B- in this area. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection grades. One critical factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are relatively minor. While this nursing home had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This tells you that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
We also want to point out that this facility received a decent grade in our nursing category. We awarded it a grade of B- in the area. Our nursing score is largely based on the facility's nurse staffing. This place provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we were hoping for. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility fared better in some of the quality measures we assessed. In fact, it scored well in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good measures of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is as important as the quantity of hours of care provided.

Long-term Care Quality
The third most favorable area we gave this facility in any category came in the category of long-term care, where we awarded it a grade of C. Our long-term care grades are based in part on a facility's quantity of nursing services. This includes a vast scope of personal care services, ranging from help with activities of daily living to routine medical services. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, this nursing home was also able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we scored is short-term care. In this category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of C. Short-term care ratings are based on the nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a wide scope of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, not to mention other types of therapy. We found that this place was below average in the two key staffing areas we focus on. In fact, it supplied fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other nursing homes. It is still important to determine whether this is adversely impacting the quality of care. The final item we assessed in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We discovered that just 5 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is below average.
