Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

This nursing home received a nursing score which is stronger than its overall grade. We awarded this nursing home an above average grade of B+ in this area. The nursing rating includes many subcategories. The most important factor is the amount of time nurses spend with residents. This nursing home provides 0 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a policy of moving patients even once per day.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B

This facility also received a favorable inspection rating. In fact, its inspection score turned out to be its second best category. In that area, we awarded this facility a B. Our inspection scores weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this category typically have very few severe deficiencies. While this place had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This tells you CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Remember that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Additionally, we also would like to note that this facility received impressive long-term care marks in this assessment. We awarded them one of our better grades in this category, with a grade of B. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is significantly higher than most nursing homes. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The next category we rated was short-term care. We awarded this facility a grade of C in this category. In determining our short-term care scores, we size up a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This grade is often a meaningful measure of a facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. Unfortunately, it does not look like this nursing home provided information on registered nurse or physical therapist staffing. The last metric we considered in this category is the number of residents who returned home from the facility. We found that just 3 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. Unfortunately, this was below the national average.
