Facility Inspections
In addition to receiving a strong overall rating, this facility earned an A+ inspection score. This is based on its recent government inspections. An A+ in this category is one of the best complements we can offer a facility. Inspection scores are tied to pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that excel in this category have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received an A+ short-term care grade, making it one of the few facilities to be given several A+ category grades. In the category of short-term care, we endeavor to evaluate indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is usually a favorable sign. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of facilities with 60 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most nursing homes.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was strong in the category of long-term care, where it received a grade of A. Few nursing homes fared better in this category. Facilities that excel in this category typically provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia tragically can be a dangerous ailment for nursing home patients so we like it when a facility doesn't take any chances. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this facility had 2.49 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Nurse Quality
In the last category we graded, this facility was given a very strong grade of B+ in our nursing category. With this grade, the facility rounded out a very favorable profile. In determining our nursing grades, we factor in both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the skill levels of those nurses. This particular nursing home provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per patient each day. At least one quarter of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are skilled nurses. This is a high percentage of skilled nursing care. In computing our ratings, we apply additional weight to care provided by registered nurses. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can many times be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
