This facility really fared well in the area of long-term care, with an A- in this area. This really propped up its overall grade quite a bit. Long-term care scores of this caliber generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. After considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is better than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

We also wanted to emphasize this place's nearly flawless government inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of B+ in this category. Inspection scores account for several factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better scores in this category tend to have very few severe deficiencies. It doesn't look like we were able to find deficiency counts for this nursing home. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.

This facility's second lowest category was short-term care, where it received just a D in that category. This is a relatively poor grade. In crafting these short-term care grades, we quantify the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to devise a tool for comparing the rehabilitation services of various facilities. Given its grade in this area, we weren't surprised to discover that this place was well below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its patients based on the data we looked at. Frankly, this was about what we expected to find. Lastly, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This wasn't a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 0 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. At most facilities, around half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.

The last area we scored was nursing. Unfortunately, we gave it an abysmal F for this category, which is a very poor score. This is obviously a major disappointment. Our nursing rating looks at the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of training of the nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with patients. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. To go along with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this facility also did not fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This facility had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average nursing home. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these scores hurt this facility's nursing rating significantly.
