Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this place is a strong facility is that it received an impressive inspection grade. In fact, inspections turned out to be its best category grade. In this area, we gave it an A+. Arguably the most critical factor we look at in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home was awarded an impressive short-term care grade as well. We gave it one of our higher grades in that category with a grade of B+. In the area of short-term care, we seek to assess measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We look at a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents that were able to return home from this facility. It performed better than most nursing homes in this area with 52.5 percent of its residents returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
The third area we assessed is long-term care. This nursing home was awarded a very positive long-term care grade, with a grade of B in this area. When facilities receive this type of score in this category it is typically a good sign for resident care and suggests that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses aids. After considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents out of the hospital. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this facility had 3.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this wasn't as impressive as some of its other scores in this area, this figure may be skewed for some facilities due to the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
Nurse Quality
Turning to our final category, this nursing home was given a respectable nursing grade of C. When determining a facility's nursing score, we assess the number of hours nurses commit to patients and the levels of training of the nurses. Based on the CMS data, this nursing home offers 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these areas as predictive indicators of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
