Long-term Care Quality
This facility earned an elite long-term care rating. In fact, we gave this nursing home an A- in this category, which boosted its overall grade. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. After looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Facility Inspections
This facility actually earned a solid inspection report this year as well, with few major dings from the applicable government inspectors. As a result, it received one of our better grades in that category with a score of B-. We were surprised this facility received multiple category grades of this caliber. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these can be quite minor. This place was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This indicates that the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies an immediate risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.

Short-term Care Quality
The third most favorable area we awarded this facility in any category came in the category of short-term care, where we awarded it a grade of C. Our short-term care ratings are thought to be most meaningful for people in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally utilizes higher levels of skilled nursing. This includes not just nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Unfortunately, this facility was below average in terms of its number of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its patients based on the measures we assessed. The important question is whether this adversely affected quality of care. The last metric we considered in this area is the number of patients that eventually returned home from the facility. We found that just 4.8 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
Nurse Quality
The final area we assessed is nursing, which turned out to be this nursing home's weakest area. We gave this facility a grade of D in that category. The nursing score considers many factors. The most heavily weighted one is the quantity of hours nurses spent with residents. This nursing home averaged just 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. In addition to rating below average in nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also had poor scores in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This facility was at about 150 percent of the national average in both of these statistics. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. These metrics helped pull down this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.
