Facility Inspections
On top of being a first rate facility overall, this nursing home performed well in our inspections category, where it earned an A+. Very few places performed this well in this category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection grades. One key factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some can be quite minor. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also received an A+ for its short-term care score. Our short-term care ratings are based on a facility's quantity of skilled highly skilled professionals. This includes a broad range of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other types of therapy. This facility is substantially above the national average in terms of its quantity of both registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its residents. In fact, it offered roughly 1.5 times as much care per resident from both of these groups of skilled professionals than the typical nursing home provided. The final datapoint we assessed in this category is the number of patients who eventually returned home from the facility. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Michigan in this area with 78.9 percent of its patients returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
The third area we analyzed is long-term care. This facility also was given an A+ long-term care grade, making it one of the few facilities to be given multiple A+ category grades. Facilities that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. On top of providing elite levels of nurse staffing, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients healthy. This combination proved to be successful as this place was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Nurse Quality
In our final category, we awarded this facility an A+ for its nursing rating. This rounded out a very favorable profile. There are a host of subcategories within this area. Most of the criteria relate to the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. This place provided 4.7 hours of nursing care per patient daily, which is among the better figures in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We were really impressed by both of these figures. On top of offering high levels of nursing care, this nursing home also excelled in several of the quality measures we looked at. With under five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the nation in this category.
