Facility Inspections
The main reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it earned an excellent inspection score. In fact, its inspection score was far better than its overall score. In the inspections category, we gave it an A+. Our inspection scores weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this category tend to have very few of these severe deficiencies. This nursing home received 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to be an immediate threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
We also wanted to point out that this facility was awarded a great long-term care score. In fact, it received one of our highest scores in that area with a grade of A. When nursing homes receive this type of grade in this category it is typically a good sign for patient care and suggests that the facility is well-staffed with nurses aids. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 99.44827 percent of its patients, which is very impressive. Pneumonia sadly can be a dangerous illness for nursing home patients so we like it when a facility doesn't roll the dice on this issue. The last statistic we assessed was the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this facility had 2.91 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this admittedly wasn't as strong as most of its other scores in this category, this figure may be skewed for some nursing homes based on the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category was its nursing grade, where it received a grade of C. There are a host of criteria within this grade. Most of the subcategories reflect staffing levels. This nursing home provided just 3.1 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is a low total compared with most other nursing homes. Finally, our nursing scores also factor in some quality-focused measures. We especially look at the percentage of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. Sometimes these metrics are decent indicators of the quality of nursing care, since superior care tends to reduce these problems.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's least impressive area was short-term care, which is the final category we scored. In this area, we gave this nursing home a grade of just D. In determining our short-term care ratings, we assess the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This grade is generally a meaningful assessment of a facility's rehabilitation. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The last statistic we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 24.8 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. This statistic was damning for this facility's short-term care grade.
