Facility Inspections
On top of receiving a great overall score, this place also earned first-rate government inspections in recent years. We awarded them one of our better grades in this area, with an A. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this area typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this place had some deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.
Short-term Care Quality
Another quality feature for this facility is that it was given an impressive short-term care score. In fact, this proved to be its second best category score. In that category, we gave this facility a grade of B+. Our short-term care ratings are considered to be more critical for those in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally utilizes more skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not merely nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. The final datapoint we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents that ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. This place fared better than most nursing homes in this area with 50.9 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
This facility is also strong in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of B+. It outperformed most nursing homes in this category. There are several subcategories within this category. Most of the datapoints are tied to the quantity of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed certain nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these metrics as predictive measures of the quality of nursing care provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we scored was long-term care, turned out to be this nursing home's least impressive area. We awarded this facility a D in that area. This really is one of the couple of dings of an otherwise impressive report card. If you are seeking services other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at long-term care scores. After considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. We were pleased to find that this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. To our surprise, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.79 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility has less hospitalizations than many nursing homes. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
