Nurse Quality

Grade: A

One of the many reasons this place received a great overall grade is that it earned a very impressive nursing score. This turned out to be its best category. In this area, we gave this facility an A. Nursing ratings are based in large part on quantity of nursing care available. This nursing home averages 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home Massachusetts in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as having a system of turning patients at least once a day.

Grade: A

This nursing home also was awarded a high-end short-term care grade. This actually ended up being this facility's second strongest category score. In that area, this facility received a score of A. In determining these short-term care grades, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The goal is to create a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of different facilities. One reason for this nursing home's impressive rating in this category is that it provides a significantly larger volume of hours of physical therapy to its residents than the typical facility. The last measure we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Massachusetts in this area with 58.3 percent of its residents returning home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

This nursing home has had near flawless government inspections in recent years. We gave them an impressive grade of A- in this area. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this area most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

Turning to the fourth category, this nursing home was awarded a strong long-term care rating. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B+ in that area, topping off one of our finer profiles. When facilities receive this kind of grade in this category it is usually a good sign for resident care and suggests that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses and aids. This facility vaccinated 94.52888 percent of its patients for pneumonia. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients healthy. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations.
