Registered Staff Hours
In addition to a phenomenal overall grade, this facility also received A+ nursing grade. There are a variety of criteria included in this area. Most of the subcategories are tied to nurse staffing. This particular facility provided 5.3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This was one of the more impressive figures we found. Furthermore, a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. In addition to providing impressive levels of nursing care, this nursing home was also above average in several of the major quality measures we looked at in this category. By way of illustration, it performed well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. These areas are generally reliable measures of the quality of nursing care a facility provides.
Short-term Care Quality
This high end facility also performed well in the area of short-term care, where we awarded it a grade of A+. Very few facilities performed better in this area. With our short-term care grade, we strive to create a valuable gauge for rehabilitation. In doing so, we assess the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. Remarkably, this nursing home provides approximately 50% more hours of services from registered nurses and physical therapists than most nursing homes we looked at. This is an excellent sign. The last metric we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Virginia in this area with 69.6 percent of its patients returning home. For most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

Adding to an already impressive profile, this facility also received virtually flawless health inspections in recent years. As a result, we awarded it an A+ inspection grade. Arguably the most important factor we look at in determining our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Facilities with higher grades in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that we were able to find deficiency counts for this nursing home. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
In the final category we assessed, this nursing home received an impressive grade grade of A in our long-term care category. With this grade, the facility rounded out a straight A report card. Nursing homes that receive this type of grade in long-term care typically provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure residents are well cared for. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 96.36363 percent of its patients, which is very impressive. Pneumonia is too frequently a dangerous health condition for nursing home residents so we like it when a facility does not take any chances. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
