Facility Inspections
While we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received a fairly respectable inspection report this year. As a result, it received a decent grade in that category with a score of B-. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining our inspection ratings. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively minor. Although this place had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also didn't grade out poorly in the area of short-term care. In fact, we awarded it a C in that category, which happens to be another one of its more favorable grades. In the category of short-term care, we attempt to assess measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We assess a facility's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more than 50% more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. The final metric we considered in this category is the number of patients that ultimately returned home from the nursing home. This place fared respectably with 46.6 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
Remarkably, we awarded this nursing home a grade of C for our nursing rating, which isn't a bad grade. Nursing grades are tied to quality and quantity of nursing care. Based on the data, it looks like this nursing home provides an impressive 4 hours per patient daily. This is more nursing care than most facilities offer. In determining our grades, we apply more weight to hours performed by more highly trained nurses such as registered or licensed nurses. Finally, our nursing rating also includes relevant quality-based metrics. While this facility excelled in terms of quantity of nursing hours, it fell short in some of the subcategories that related to quality. This nursing home's nursing grade was pulled down by its subpar performance in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers. We found that 13.2 percent of this nursing home's patients were suffering from pressure ulcers. Since some pressure ulcers can be avoided with proper nursing protocols, we reduce a facility's nursing grade when we find this kind of prevalence of pressure ulcers.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we rated is long-term care, turned out to be this nursing home's weakest area. We gave this facility a grade of D in this category. For residents seeking a permanent residence rather than rehabilitation, long-term care is an important category. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 95.22293 percent of its residents. We were far less impressed with the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this facility had 4.52 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is more than twice the national average. This is certainly an alarming statistic.
