Nurse Quality
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ nursing grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. There are many subcategories within this area. Many of the subcategories relate to nurse staffing. This facility provided 6.6 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis, which is among the better totals in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We were very impressed by these figures. On top of offering impressive levels of care, this place also performed well in several of the quality measures we assessed. In terms of the percentage of its residents suffering falls resulting in serious injury, this place performed as well as any nursing home the state.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was strong in the area of long-term care, where it received a score of A. Only a select group of nursing homes fared better in this category. When nursing homes receive this kind of grade in this category it is typically a good sign for patient care and suggests that the facility is well-staffed with nurses and aids. On top of very favorable nursing hour statistics, this facility's vaccination records was as good as it gets also. Indeed, it vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Short-term Care Quality
Adding to its first-rate profile, this nursing home also was awarded a dominant short-term care grade, with a grade of A. Our short-term care scores are probably more meaningful for people in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation typically mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes not just nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. This facility provides more services with registered nurses and physical therapists than most nursing homes we looked at. This is generally a very favorable sign. The last statistic we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients that ultimately returned home from the nursing home. We found that it fared better than most facilities in this area with 50.8 percent of its residents returning home.
Facility Inspections
Finally, this nursing home also earned excellent government inspections in recent years. We awarded it one of our best grades in the area of inspections, with an A. Few other nursing homes can boast of receiving an A- or better in all four categories. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection grades. One critical factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some can be quite insignificant. This place was assessed 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies to cause an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
