The primary reason this nursing home received a decent overall grade is its excellent inspections in recent years. We awarded them one of our higher grades in that category, with a grade of A+. This is a much better score than the place's overall score, which was decent but certainly not elite. Inspection grades weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with better grades in this category typically have very few severe deficiencies. This nursing home was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This indicates that CMS didn't consider any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate risk to resident health or safety. A few minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

We also gave this nursing home a positive grade in long-term care. This nursing home earned a B in this category, which turns out to be one of our more favorable scores. Long-term care ratings in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 98.29684 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients healthy. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. While it had 2.68 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was better than most facilities due to it having more complex patients.

Another strength of this facility is its favorable grade in nursing. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with a score of D. Nursing ratings are based largely on quantity of nursing care available. This facility provided 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is below the national average. In addition to receiving below average scores for nursing hours, this nursing home was less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and found this facility was at approximately 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is a bad sign when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic dragged down this facility's nursing grade substantially.

The final category we analyzed is short-term care, is this nursing home's worst area. We gave this facility a grade of D in this area. In computing our short-term care ratings, we scrutinize a facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This area is generally a meaningful assessment of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. With its poor score in this area, we weren't shocked to discover this place offered far fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most other facilities. Finally, we assessed the percentage of patients who returned home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 36.2 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
