Facility Inspections
On top of receiving a strong overall score, this facility performed even better in the area of inspections which is associated with the nursing home's recent government inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A+ for this category, which is one of our highest scores. Inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor dings aren't something to panic about.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home was awarded a favorable short-term care score as well. We gave it one of our higher scores in that area with a score of B. In computing our short-term care grades, we assess the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This area is considered to be a reliable measure of a facility's rehabilitation. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. The last item we looked at in this category is the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. This turned out to be more of a strength for this facility. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Texas with 64.4 percent of its residents returning home. For most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents return home.
Long-term Care Quality
Additionally, this nursing home also received favorable long-term care scores in our assessment. In fact, we gave them one of our more favorable scores in that category, with a score of B. Long-term care grades in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. One of the statistics we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccinations. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its patients. This is a reliable method to avoid unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the aged 65 and up population. This place was also able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Although it had 2.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was better than most nursing homes since it had more complex patients.
Nurse Quality
The next category we assessed is nursing. We gave it a grade of C in this area. This is a decent grade in this category. Our nursing rating analyzes many subcategories, most of which are based on levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is a relatively low total compared with most nursing homes. Finally, we also considered some quality-based statistics in this category. Although this place didn't rank highly in terms of nursing hours per resident, it fared better in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. In terms of the number of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this nursing home performed better than average. This is usually an indicator that a place has sufficient quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided with better nursing care.
