In addition to being a first rate facility overall, this facility performed well in our inspections category, where it received an A+. Very few nursing homes fared as well in this category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining our inspection ratings. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some can be relatively minor. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

Among its many dominant grades, this nursing home was given an excellent short-term care grade. In fact, we gave it a score of A in this area. Short-term care grades are based on the nursing home's quantity of skilled highly skilled professionals. This means a vast scope of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, in addition to other types of therapy. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of physical therapy per week to its residents. The last measure we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Connecticut in this area with 64.8 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. The nursing grade weighs quite a few components, but the most important one is the number of nurse hours per patient per week. This nursing home provides an incredible 4.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is far better than what is provided by most facilities. Lastly, this place also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. In terms of the percentage of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average.

The final category we looked at is long-term care, in which this nursing home was awarded a grade of B. Although this ended up being its lowest category grade, this is nevertheless a quality rating. For prospective residents looking for a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are very important. This facility's vaccination data were a bit weaker than some of its other data points in this category, such as its nursing hours. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to just 82.182625 percent of its patients. We'd love to see some improvement herein this statistic next year. While its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we like to see, we were pleased to find place was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.44 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility has fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home.
