Facility Inspections
While we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received a fairly respectable inspection report this year. As a result, it received a decent grade in that category with a score of B-. Inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
We were also surprised to find that this facility earned a reasonably solid long-term care score this year. We awarded it a C in this area. Long-term care grades are often used to assess a facility's performance as a traditional convalescent home, as opposed to focusing on the skilled nursing services provided by a rehabilitation facility. In addition to considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 99.22078 percent of its residents, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this nursing home was also able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to the area of short-term care, this facility received a grade of just D in that area. In calculating our short-term care scores, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to formulate a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Based on its weak rating in this area, we were not stunned to discover this facility offers substantially fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents that ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 4.9 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
Nurse Quality
The next area we rated was nursing. We gave it an abysmal F for this category, which is a rock bottom grade. We analyzed the licensure of nurses employed by the facility, in addition to the number of hours the nurses worked with residents, in computing our grade in this category. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. On top of ranking below average in nursing hours per resident, this place also had poor scores in the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in both of these data points. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These scores helped pull down this facility's nursing grade significantly.
