We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility excelled in our nursing rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Our nursing score consists of a handful of subcategories, but the primary one is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This facility provided 8.1 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This was one of the more impressive totals we found. In addition, we found that a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. In addition to offering high levels of care, this place also excelled in the quality-based metrics we assessed. By way of illustration, it performed as well as any facility in the country when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these datapoints as good measures of the quality of nursing care being provided.

This facility also received a virtually flawless inspection report. As a result, it earned one of our highest scores in that category with an A+. This is one of the few nursing homes to receive multiple A+ category grades. Our inspection grades weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area usually have very few severe deficiencies. While this place had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. A couple minor dings aren't the end of the world.

The third category we looked at was short-term care. This nursing home excelled in our short-term care rating as well. We awarded them an elite score of A+ in this area. In computing our short-term care grades, we analyze the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This score is considered to be a solid measure of the nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered quite a bit more care from registered nurses than most facilities. The last statistic we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. It performed as well as just about any facility in Illinois in this area with 62.3 percent of its residents returning home. With most facilities, less than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

In the last category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for its long-term care score. This topped off a first-rate profile. Facilities that receive this kind of score in long-term care typically provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure patients are kept in good health. One of the criteria we considered after this nursing home's quality nursing hours is vaccines. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are a great way to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations for the elderly. This combination proved to be successful as this place also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
