Short-term Care Quality
On top of earning a great overall score, this facility also received an A+ short-term care grade. Short-term care grades are vital for patients looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually utilizes additional skilled nursing services. This means a broad scope of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. This facility excelled in two key staffing areas we looked at. In fact, it offered about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than a typical facility. This is often an encouraging sign. The last statistic we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents who ultimately were able to return home from the facility. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Pennsylvania in this area with 72.7 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home also received an A+ inspection grade, making it one of the few places to receive multiple A+'s in our category grades. This score is based on the facility's inspection reports. An A+ in this category is one of the biggest complements we can pay to a facility. Arguably the most important factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this area typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. We were not able to locate deficiency counts for this nursing home. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
Adding to its impressive resume, this nursing home also excelled in our nursing category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category. Our nursing grade looks at the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We consider both the levels of training of those nurses as well as the number of hours spent with residents. This facility provided 3.6 hours of nursing care per patient daily. About one-fourth of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are among the most skilled nurses. This is an impressive ratio of skilled nursing care. We weight these hours performed by skilled nurses more in determining our nursing ratings. Lastly, we also looked at certain nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as reliable measures of the quality of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
Switching gears to our last category, this nursing home also performed admirably in our long-term care category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- in this area. This rounded out truly elite profile. Facilities that excel in this category tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is much higher than the average nursing home. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
