Short-term Care Quality
In addition to being a strong nursing home overall, this facility also excelled in our short-term care rating, where it received an A+. Our short-term care ratings are considered to be most important for residents requiring a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically utilizes higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. This means not merely nursing services, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. This facility excelled at the highest level in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is an excellent sign. The last datapoint we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Delaware in this area with 68.9 percent of its residents returning home. At most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received an A+ for its nursing grade. Nursing ratings are largely based on the facility's nurse staffing. This nursing home provided 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident daily, which is among the better totals in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We were very impressed by these statistics. On top of offering high levels of nursing care, this nursing home also excelled in several of the quality measures we looked at. With less than five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Delaware in this category.
Long-term Care Quality
The third area we looked at was long-term care. Adding to its high-end resume, this facility also performed well in that category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of of A for the category. When nursing homes receive this kind of grade in this category it is typically a good sign for resident care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. One of the factors we considered on top of this nursing home's quality nursing hours is vaccinations. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 98.61111 percent of its patients. Vaccines are a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths for seniors. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Facility Inspections
Another impressive feature for this nursing home is its inspection rating. In that area, we gave this nursing home a grade of A-, finishing off its straight A performance. Inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
