To go along with its strong overall performance, we gave this facility an A+ for the area of inspections. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This tells you that CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it was awarded a favorable long-term care grade. In fact, long-term care turned out to be its second most impressive category score. In that category, we awarded this facility a score of A. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. After we finished assessing the volume of care provided by nurses, we next considered the facility's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is often a life or death condition for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a nursing home doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

The third category we looked at is short-term care, where this nursing home was given a C in this area. In the area of short-term care, we try to assess measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Unfortunately, we weren't able to locate information on registered nurse or physical therapy staffing for this nursing home. The final item we considered in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. We discovered that just 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is below average.

This nursing home's worst area is nursing, which is the final category we assessed. In this category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of just D. There are many factors within this area. Most of the factors reflect the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. This facility averaged only 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is well below average. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality measures in calculating our nursing grades. This nursing home performed well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.
