To go along with its strong overall performance, we gave this facility an A+ for the area of inspections. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This tells you that CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it was awarded a favorable long-term care grade. In fact, long-term care turned out to be its second most impressive category score. In that category, we awarded this facility a score of A. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. After we finished assessing the volume of care provided by nurses, we next considered the facility's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is often a life or death condition for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a nursing home doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

This facility's short-term care grade is one of its lower grades. Unfortunately, the facility received a grade of D in this area, which really isn't very good. In the category of short-term care, we seek to assess measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We assess the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. In this nursing home's case, we found that it provides less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The final measure we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 0 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these poor statistics was damning for this nursing home's short-term care score.

The final category we rated was nursing. Unfortunately, we gave it a lowly F in this category, which is a rock bottom grade. You should not simply dismiss a nursing home as a result of one terrible score though. There are several criteria included in this grade. Many of the subcategories relate to nurse staffing. This nursing home offered a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is not a very impressive figure. Unfortunately, this nursing home also did not perform as well as we had hoped in some of the quality measures we assessed for this category.
