Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

We want to draw your attention to the fact that this nursing home really outperformed its overall grade in the area of inspections. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, we gave it one of our best grades in that category with a grade of A+. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this area typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this facility had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This means the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

We also awarded this nursing home a solid score in the area of short-term care, with a B-. In calculating our short-term care grades, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our purpose is to create a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Unfortunately, we found that this facility provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The tricky part is determining what effect this had on quality of care. The last statistic we considered in this category is the percentage of residents who ultimately returned home from the facility. We found that just 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: D

Sadly, this nursing home only earned a D for its long-term care grade, which is not a score to write home about. In a long-term care setting, the primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is better than the majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. Sadly, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

The next area we assessed was nursing. Sadly, it received an abysmal F in this area, which is an abysmal score. This is clearly a significant concern. We assessed the qualifications of nurses at the facility, in addition to the quantity of time the nurses spent with residents, in calculating our score in this category. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality measures in computing our nursing ratings. This place fared well in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. Many consider these data points to be measures of the quality of nursing care.
