Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home really excelled in our short-term care rating. We awarded it an impressive grade of A for that category, which is one of our highest scores. This really salvaged its profile. Short-term care scores are important for patients seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires additional skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means a vast scope of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. We were extremely impressed to find that this facility offers its residents substantially more physical therapist hours than most other nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the country with 68.5 percent of its patients returning home.
Facility Inspections
This facility's inspection rating exceeded its overall score as well. We awarded them one of our better grades in that category, with a grade of B. This is a better score than its overall grade. Our inspection scores account for a host of factors found on a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with better grades in this category typically have very few of these severe deficiencies. While this facility had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This tells you the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category grade came in the area of nursing. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of C. We scrutinized the skill-level of nurses at the facility, in addition to the quantity of hours the nurses spent with patients, in calculating our grade in this area. This nursing home averages 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also considered some quality-based metrics. This nursing home performed well in some of the quality measures we looked at. For example, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this nursing home performed better than the national average. This is typically a reliable indicator that a place has sufficient quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided with better nursing care.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we looked at was long-term care. In that category, we gave this facility a grade of C. For long-term care residents, the primary objective is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination record. We were pleased to discover that this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia. Unfortunately, this nursing home's hospitalization rate was less impressive. Here we found that this nursing home had 2.42 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
