Facility Inspections
In addition to receiving a quality overall score, this facility also earned excellent health inspections recently. We awarded it one of our highest grades in that area, with an A. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection grades. One key factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some end up being relatively minor. While this facility had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Adding to its first-rate resume, this facility also was awarded a dominant long-term care score, with a score of A-. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. After we finished assessing the amount of nursing care, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia can be a deadly illness for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home does not roll the dice on this issue. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also received a impressive short-term care score. Indeed, this is this nursing home's third strongest category score. In that category, we gave this facility a score of A-. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to measure a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation To provide highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to feature higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. One of this nursing home's strengths is physical therapy hours. We found that it offers more hours with physical therapists to its residents than most facilities. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the nation with 65.5 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
The final category we scored was nursing. We gave this nursing home a solid grade in this category, with a grade of B-. While this isn't on par with some of this nursing home's other scores, it is nevertheless not a poor grade. The nursing score is based on a handful of subcategories, however, the most important consideration is the level of nurse hours per patient per week. This facility provides an impressive 4 hours of nursing care per resident daily. Finally, we also considered quality measures in calculating our nursing ratings. This nursing home was above average in several of the major areas we focus on, including minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. These statistics are sometimes good indicators of the quality of nursing care available.
