Registered Staff Hours
To go along with a strong overall score, we gave this facility an A+ for inspections. Perhaps the most significant factor we look at in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with better scores in this category most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This place was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This means that CMS did not consider any of these deficiencies to create an imminent risk to resident safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received an A+ for its long-term care score. When nursing homes receive this kind of score in long-term care it is typically a good sign for resident care and indicates that the place is well-staffed with nurses aids. Once we assessed the volume of nursing care, we then looked at the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia tragically can be a life threatening illness for nursing home residents so we like it when a facility doesn't leave its residents vulnerable. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Does this page answer your questions about White Oak Manor - Spartanburg?
Another reason we rated this nursing home so highly is that it received an A+ nursing grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. When determining a facility's nursing rating, we look at the number of hours nurses are caring for residents and the level of skill of the nurses. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a protocol of turning patients at least once a day.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we rated was short-term care. We gave this nursing home a decent grade in this area, with a C. While this is not as high as some of its other scores, it is still nothing to be ashamed of. With our short-term care assessment, we attempt to craft a valuable barometer for rehabilitation. In this process, we look at a facility's offerings of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, based on the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients that eventually returned home from this nursing home. We found that 4.3 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was well below the national average.
