Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this ended up being a quality facility is that it received an impressive inspection rating. Inspections turned out to be its best category. In this category, we gave this facility an A+. Inspection ratings are tied to pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that score well in this category tend to have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This place received 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This indicates that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to create an immediate risk to resident safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Additionally, this nursing home also received favorable long-term care scores this year. Indeed, we awarded them one of our higher grades in that category, with a score of B+. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 94.49152 percent of its residents, which is higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to our next area, this nursing home also received a score of B for its short-term care rating. This is an above average grade in this category. Short-term care ratings are based on a facility's quantity of highly-skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This includes a vast scope of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, in addition to other types of therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Finally, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return home from this facility. It performed as well as just about any nursing home in the country with 67.4 percent of its patients returning home. Most facilities are below 50 percent in this statistic.
Nurse Quality
Turning to our fourth area, this facility didn't fare very well. Due to a poor grade of F in nursing, this was notably its worst category grade. Nursing grades are based in large part on quality and quantity of nursing care. Quantity of nursing care does not appear to be the source of this facility's poor nursing grade. This place provides 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is better than we expected. In determining our grades, we apply additional weight to hours performed by highly skilled nurses such as registered or licensed nurses. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed admirably in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Some falls can be avoided if a nursing home provides enough nurses aids to assist its residents.
