One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. While this facility had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few relatively minor dings are not the end of the world.

Adding to its strong resume, this facility also received an excellent nursing score, with a grade of A. Nursing grades are largely tied to a facility's nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per patient each day. At least one quarter of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are skilled nurses. This is a high ratio of skilled nursing. In determining our nursing scores, we apply additional weight to care provided by more highly trained nurses such as registered nurses. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can many times be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Turning our third area, this facility was given a strong long-term care score. In fact, it received a grade of A in this area. Facilities that receive this type of grade in this category tend to provide consistent around the clock care to make sure patients are well cared for. Once we concluded our assessment of the volume of care provided by nurses, we turned to the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is very impressive. Pneumonia is too frequently a life threatening illness for nursing home residents so we like it when a nursing home doesn't leave this to chance. This place also keeps its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 1.52 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.

The final category we assessed is short-term care, in which this facility was awarded a grade of B-. Although this proved to be its lowest category rating, this is still not a bad grade. Our short-term care grade is typically used to gauge a facility's rehabilitation services. To provide highly scored rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to feature better levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other licensed professionals. One reason for this place's strong score in this category is that it provides more care from registered nurses than the typical facility. The final metric we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that just 19.4 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
