Facility Inspections
While we were fairly low on this facility overall, we awarded it a grade of A for our inspections rating. This score is far more impressive than the facility's overall grade. Our inspection ratings account for several factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid places with a list of deficiencies flagged. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's second most favorable score was long-term care, but even there it earned a grade of just D in that area. This turns out to be a relatively poor score. For residents in need of a permanent place to live rather than skilled nursing, long-term care grades are a key measure. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination record. We were optimistic to discover that this nursing home vaccinated 93.98496 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility fared radically worse with 4.88 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, this statistic is more than double the national average.
Nurse Quality
Turning to the area of nursing care, this facility received a grade of just D in this category. The nursing grade includes a variety of factors. The most important factor is the number of hours nurses spent with residents. This nursing home provides 3.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Unfortunately, this place also had terrible scores in some of the quality-based metrics to go along with its weak nursing hour totals. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and we were quite disappointed. This nursing home was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this measure. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic helped pull down this nursing home's nursing score quite a bit.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to the fourth category, this nursing home really didn't fare very well here either. With an abysmal grade of F in short-term care, this is about as bad as it gets. Our short-term care ratings are arguably more critical for patients requiring rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally mandates more skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not merely nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Not surprisingly, we discovered that this nursing home offers significantly less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the average nursing home. Finally, we looked at the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 35.9 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
