We want to point out that this facility outperformed its overall score in the category of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our best grades in this category with an A+. Inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Based on this, we had favorable view of this facility's recent inspections.

This nursing home also was awarded a favorable grade in our long-term care category. We awarded this nursing home a better than average grade of B in this category. Nursing homes that receive this type of score in this category typically provide consistent around the clock care to make sure residents are well cared for. One of the factors we considered after nursing hours is vaccines. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccination is a great way to minimize unnecessary deaths for the elderly population. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home had 2.71 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.

Another strength of this facility is its favorable grade in nursing. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of D. We scrutinized the licensure of nurses working for the nursing home, in addition to the number of hours the nurses worked with residents, in determining our score in this area. This nursing home provides 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This nursing home fared well in the area of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these statistics to be reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care.

The next area we analyzed is short-term care, which ended up being this facility's weakest area. It received an abysmal F in this category, which is clearly concerning. Our short-term care grades are considered to be more meaningful for residents in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation generally mandates additional skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not only nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. In this nursing home's case, we found that it provides less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who eventually returned home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 25.6 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
