Although we were down on this facility overall, we awarded it a grade of B for our nursing rating. Nursing grades are based largely on nurse staffing levels. This nursing home provides 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Kansas in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as by employing a protocol of turning residents even once per day.

We also awarded this nursing home a grade of B- for our inspections rating. This score is a more impressive than the facility's overall grade. Our inspection grades account for several factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. This particular nursing home received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report. Overall, this is still a solid inspection report, but we'd always recommend looking into any deficiencies you find troubling.

The next best category we gave this facility in any area came in the category of long-term care, where we awarded it a grade of C. In the category of long-term care, we focus more on the amount of services offered by a facility, rather than more medically-intensive services. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. We were a bit alarmed this nursing home provided the vaccine to just 85.27132 percent of its residents. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. With 1.83 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility was also below average.

The final category we looked at is short-term care, which turned out to be a low point for this nursing home. We gave this facility a grade of D for the area of short-term care. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we assess the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This category is often a fair measure of a facility's rehabilitation services. Unfortunately, we discovered that this nursing home offered less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most other facilities. Finally, we considered the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that just 33.4 percent of this facility's residents returned home.
