Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home really performed well in the area of long-term care, where it earned a grade of A-. Few facilities fared better in this area. If it wasn't for this grade, this place's overall grade would have been worse. For long-term care residents, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 83.181816 percent of its residents. This is a few points below what we anticipated. This facility was also able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 1.49 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home also performed well in the area of inspections. It received one of our best scores in that category with an A-. Inspection ratings are based on several pieces of information located in the a nursing home's inspection reports. Facilities that excel in this category tend to have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's second lowest category is short-term care, where it received a grade of just D in that area. This is a relatively poor grade. Our short-term care ratings are important for people in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes more highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a wide range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The last metric we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. This place performed better in this area, with 55.2 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
Turning to the fourth area, we gave this nursing home a D for the area of nursing. This was the nursing home's worst category score. Nursing scores are largely based on the facility's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provided only 3.3 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Finally, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing ratings. This facility was above average in two of the major areas we considered, with good scores for minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
