Long-term Care Quality
We also found that this nursing home excelled in long-term care. We gave them an A+ in this area. Facilities that do well in long-term care tend to provide patients with closer supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. After assessing the significant amount of nursing hours provided by this facility, we next considered the facility's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is far higher than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Nurse Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for its nursing grade. The nursing category analyzes a handful of subcategories, most of which are associated with quantities of nurse staffing. This nursing home provided 5.1 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This was one of the better totals we found. Furthermore, we found that a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. On top of offering impressive levels of care, this nursing home also excelled in the quality measures we assessed. For example, it performed as well as any nursing home in Florida in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these metrics as predictive measures of the quality of nursing care provided.
Facility Inspections
This facility also earned a nearly flawless government inspection report. It received one of our top scores in that area with an A+. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining these inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these end up being relatively insignificant. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
In the last category we looked at, this facility was awarded a very favorable grade of A- in our short-term care category. With this grade, the nursing home topped off a straight A report card. In computing our short-term care grades, we analyze the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This area is often a solid measure of a nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. This facility is significantly above the national average in terms of its quantity of both registered nurse and physical therapy hours offered to its residents. It provided about 50% more care per resident from both of these care providers than the typical nursing home provided. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 43.4 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
