Short-term Care Quality
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ short-term care grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. With our short-term care rating, we try to create a sound measure for rehabilitation services. In this process, we analyze the nursing home's scope of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. This nursing home is the gold standard when it comes to skilled nursing staffing. The facility supplied roughly 50% more registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the typical nursing home. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the country in this area with 70 percent of its residents returning home.
Facility Inspections
This facility also received an A+ inspection score, making it one of the rare facilities to receive multiple A+'s in our category grades. This score is based on the facility's recent inspections. These inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This nursing home was assessed 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This means that the inspectors didn't deem any of these deficiencies an immediate threat to resident safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for its nursing grade. When determining a facility's nursing score, we assess the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the level of skill of those nurses. This facility boasts a really impressive 6 hours of nursing care per resident each day, of which a significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. On top of offering high levels of nursing care, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering falls leading to serious injury, this place performed as well as any nursing home the nation. Avoiding major falls is generally a good indicator that a facility has quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Long-term Care Quality
The fourth category we analyzed is long-term care, where this nursing home was given a grade of A-. This topped off a very strong profile. Only a select few nursing homes earned an A- or higher in each of our categories. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. In addition to offering very favorable levels of nurse staffing, this facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients healthy. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.39 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home.
