Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

On top of being a strong facility overall, it also received A+ government inspections in recent years. Its inspections are virtually flawless. Inspection grades are tied to several pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that score well in this area have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

To add to its top-shelf accomplishments in other areas, we gave this facility a grade of A for its long-term care grade. When facilities receive a grade in this range in long-term care it typically means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. After assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents out of the hospital. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

In addition, this nursing home also was awarded favorable short-term care grades this year. Indeed, we gave it one of our stronger scores in that area, with a score of B+. Short-term care scores are crucial for residents needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually utilizes higher levels of skilled nursing. This means a vast range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. It doesn't appear that this facility submitted registered nurse or physical therapist staffing data. The final metric we assessed in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We discovered that 0 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

The final category we analyzed is nursing, where this facility was given a grade of B. Although this is its least impressive category rating, this is still a favorable grade. We analyzed the skill-level of nurses at the nursing home, as well as the quantity of time the nurses worked with residents, in calculating our grade in this area. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home Iowa in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as employing a policy of turning patients more frequently.
