Facility Inspections
To pair with a favorable overall grade, we gave this nursing home an A+ for inspections. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection ratings. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are quite insignificant. Unfortunately, we weren't able to find deficiency data for this nursing home. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
Adding to its impressive profile, this nursing home also performed well in our short-term care category. In fact, we gave it a grade of A in the area. In the category of short-term care, we strive to qualify indicators of a facility's rehabilitation services. We look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. This facility is above average both in terms of its quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours offered to its residents. The final metric we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Rhode Island in this area with 62.4 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A in our nursing category. In computing our nursing ratings, we factor in both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the skill levels of those nurses. This facility provided 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can often be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Long-term Care Quality
In our final area, this facility also was awarded an excellent long-term care grade, with a grade of B+. This rounded out a first-rate profile. Nursing homes that receive this kind of score in long-term care tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to ensure patients are kept in good health. One of the factors we considered after nursing hours was vaccinations. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 99.44134 percent of its patients. Vaccination is a proven method to avoid unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the senior population. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.69 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
