Facility Inspections
We want to draw your attention to the fact that this facility really outperformed its overall score in the category of inspections. In fact, it received an excellent government inspection report this year. As a result, we gave it one of our highest grades in this category with a grade of A-. Our inspection scores account for several factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area tend to have very few of these severe deficiencies. Although this place had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are rare in this industry.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received a positive score in our short-term care category. We awarded this facility an above average grade of B+ in that area. Short-term care grades are based in part on the nursing home's quantity of skilled nursing services. This includes a wide range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. However, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients that ultimately were able to return home from this facility. We found that 6.8 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

Long-term Care Quality
Sadly, this nursing home's third highest score is long-term care. Nevertheless, with a grade of D in this category, it still performed relatively badly. Nursing homes that receive this type of grade in long-term care likely don't provide the type of consistent around the clock care that some other facilities provide. One of the factors we considered in addition to nursing hours is vaccinations. Candidly, we were a bit bothered by the fact that this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to a relatively low 66.66667 percent of its residents. To our surprise, this facility was actually able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had fewer hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. This is its best feature in this category.
Nurse Quality
Turning to our next area, we awarded this nursing home a grade of D for nursing. This was the facility's least impressive category grade. Sadly, this category pulled down the facility's overall profile to a certain degree. When calculating our nursing grades, we look at both staffing levels and the skill levels of the nurses. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. In addition to receiving below average scores for nursing hours, this place was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and found that this nursing home was at approximately 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic really pulled down this nursing home's nursing score significantly.
