Facility Inspections
Although we gave this nursing home a terrible overall grade, we awarded it an A- for our inspections score. This grade is far more impressive than the nursing home's overall grade. Inspection grades account for several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid places with a list of deficiencies flagged. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
Sadly, this facility only earned a D for its long-term care rating, which happens to be one of its higher category grades. For prospective patients in need of a permanent residence rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is a very important category. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 99.38271 percent of its patients, which is better than most nursing homes. Surprisingly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than the average nursing home. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.

Short-term Care Quality
Sadly, we gave this facility an F for its short-term care score. Short-term care ratings are important for prospective residents requiring rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires higher levels of skilled nursing. This means a vast spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other types of therapy. With its grade in this category, we weren't surprised to discover that this nursing home was well below average in terms of its number of registered nurse and physical therapy hours offered to its residents based on the data we assessed. Finally, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that just 4.4 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
Nurse Quality
Moving on to the fourth category, this facility did not fare very well in this category either. With a rock bottom grade of F in nursing, this is just about as bad as it gets. The nursing score is based on quite a few subcategories, but the primary consideration is the quantity of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. In addition to rating below average in nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also had poor marks in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in both of these statistics. This is a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These statistics helped pull down this facility's nursing grade quite a bit.
