Facility Inspections
On top of earning a great overall grade, this facility performed even better in the area of inspections which is associated with the nursing home's recent inspection reports. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which is one of our highest scores. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection ratings. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being quite insignificant. Fortunately, although this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This tells you that the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple relatively minor deficiencies are not necessarily something to panic about.
Short-term Care Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this nursing home so highly is that it received a favorable short-term care score. In fact, short-term care ended up being its second highest category grade. In that category, we gave this facility a grade of A. Our short-term care grades are considered to be more meaningful for those needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally utilizes additional skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not merely nursing services, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. This nursing home is above the national average both in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its patients. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of facilities in the country in this area with 56.6 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
In addition, this nursing home earned high marks for nursing. It received one of our highest grades in that area with a score of A-. The nursing rating is based on many subcategories, however, the most important consideration is the number of nurse hours per patient per week. This nursing home provided 3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. About one-fourth of these hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most skilled nurses. This is a high ratio of skilled nursing care. We weight these hours more in calculating our nursing grades. Lastly, we also looked at certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these datapoints as good indicators of the quality of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility's worst category was long-term care, which is the final category we looked at. We gave it an abysmal F for this category. Even with a few strong scores in other areas, this grade is nevertheless somewhat concerning so we felt obligated to make a note of it. For residents looking for a permanent residence rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are an important measure. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Fortunately, this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients, which is a very respectable statistic. Surprisingly, this place also fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 1.56 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
